Wolverines fall to UC Davis in home opening slugfest

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley baseball fell in a 22-7 slugfest to UC Davis on Friday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark. The game saw 29 runs and 31 hits combined in UVU's (2-7) home opener. Jayden Smith and Mason Strong each finished with three hits against UCD (7-2), which was led by outfielder Braydon Wooldridge, who had eight RBIs going 5-for-6.

The Wolverines tied the ballgame up in the bottom of the second when Dominic Longo II homered for his second of the season. It is the fourth multi-RBI game of the year for the sophomore from Washington.

Smith reached base in all four of his at-bats during the contest. His first inning double to left center field extended his hitting streak to five games. He later singled in the third inning for his fourth multi-hit game of the season and put two runners on base with one out.

Utah Valley added two runs in the third inning when Luke Iverson worked a seven-pitch walk and later advanced on Smith's single. Landon Frei knocked a run on a single up the middle before Mason Strong's ground rule double made it 4-2.

The 1-2 punch of Iverson and Smith struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning after a single from Iverson; he took off for second and Smith lined a double to left field to allow him to score from first base.

Strong finished 3-for-4 and reached base four times, including a home run in the fifth inning for his second of the season.

The Wolverines saw the debut of righty Sawyer Wickstrom, who pitched the ninth and recorded two of the three outs on strikeouts. Franky Lopez tossed 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout.

The Wolverines and Aggies will play a doubleheader tomorrow (Mar. 1) starting at 11:05 a.m. MT on ESPN+. The second game is scheduled roughly for 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The series wraps up on Mar. 2 at 12:05 p.m. MT.
