Early innings doom Utah Valley in 10-5 series finale loss to Seattle U

SEATTLE — A six-run third inning from the Seattle U Redhawks proved to be too much as the Utah Valley Wolverines fell 10-5 in the series finale at Logan Field on Saturday afternoon.

Rylee Thorpe went 3-for-3 at the dish with a pair of RBIs and Kalena Shepherd went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to aid in the comeback efforts in the later innings, but it ultimately proved to be too little too late.

The Wolverines were unable to cash in on early opportunities at the plate early on, with Utah Valley putting runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings but failing to bring any of them home.

Two singles sandwiched around a triple plated the first two runs for the Redhawks in the second, before SU blitzed the Wolverines for six in the third.

Back-to-back doubles from Thorpe and Shepherd got Utah Valley on the board in the fourth. A triple, double, and single from the Redhawks plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning and put the Wolverines in danger of being run-ruled.

Utah Valley responded by loading the bases with nobody out in the top of the fifth. Thorpe brought in the first run of the inning when she smashed a single through the left side to score Britney Moreno. Shepherd then drove home Mya Higareda with a sacrifice fly.

Jorja Barrett retired the Redhawks in order in the fifth to prolong the game. On the weekend, Barrett pitched 6.1 innings of relief and allowed just one run on four hits.

The Wolverines loaded the bases once again in the sixth and plated another two runs. Angelique Mann scored on a wild pitch and Thorpe drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home the two runs. Utah Valley would be retired in order in the seventh.

Utah Valley will close out their Seattle road trip tomorrow morning with a morning matinee against the No. 10 Washington Huskies. First pitch is slated for 11:05 MDT, and the game will be broadcast live on the PAC-12 Network.
