PROVO, Utah — Utah Valley dropped the first of two non-conference contests this week, falling to the BYU Cougars 9-0.
Jorja Barrett started in the circle, going 1.1 innings. Jaeden Barajas went 1-for-1 with a walk and a single before being pulled after taking a foul tip off her mask while catching in the fourth.
The Cougars plated a pair in the first with a pair of doubles sandwiched around a walk, and added a third in the second off of a solo home run. BYU then loaded the bases with one out to chase Barrett, who gave way to Payge Armendariz.
Armendariz retired the first batter she faced, but then gave up a grand slam to Huntyr Ava. The Cougars then tacked on two more in the third to up the lead to nine.
Utah Valley put a pair of runners on with nobody out in the fifth with hopes of extending the game, but a double play wiped out the rally.
The Wolverines will have a quick turnaround, as UVU will host the Idaho State Bengals tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. MDT. Tomorrow's game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live stats will be available at UVUStats.com.
