HUNTSVILLE, Texas — The Utah Valley Wolverines dropped the final game of a three-game series to the Sam Houston Bearkats by run rule, falling 10-2 in five innings.
Jaeden Barajas extended her hitting streak to six games with a 1-for-3 day at the plate. Kalena Shepherd and Payge Armendariz each picked up RBIs.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Angelique Mann hit a one-out single to start the rally. Barajas then split the gap with a double to left-center to put two runners in scoring position. Mann showed off her speed beating out a throw by the Bearkats' second baseman Haleigh Carter to score the first run. Armendariz then lined out sharply to center to bring home the second run on a sacrifice fly.
Sam Houston rode a big bottom half of the first inning to take the lead for good. The Bearkats sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs. Sam Houston added insurance runs in the 2nd and 3rd before winning the game in walk-off fashion with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth.
Utah Valley returns home for the first of 10-straight games in the state of Utah on Tuesday. Weather permitting, the Wolverines will head up to Salt Lake City on Tuesday to take on the No. 19 Utah Utes. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. MDT.
