SAN DIEGO — Katie Zuniga pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits, but she was outdueled by the LMU Lions' Jenna Perez, who punched out 12 Wolverines and allowed just two hits in a complete game shutout as the Utah Valley softball team fell 1-0 to close out the Campbell/Cartier Classic.  

"Katie really learned a lot this weekend about how to get great hittters out," said head coach Cody Thomson. "We knew this weekend was going to be a big challenge for us. There were a lot of great pitchers here that spun the ball well and threw it in the high 60's. That should help us going forward on how to make adjustments with speed and movement."

Zuniga stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the first to keep the Lions off the board. Utah Valley threatened in the fourth, with Libbie Hawker leading off the inning with a single. Britney Moreno bunted her into scoring position, and Hawker advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the Wolverines couldn't find the hit they needed.

The Lions got their one run in the bottom half of the fourth off of a leadoff home run from Morgan DeBord. Zuniga held LMU to just one hit the remainder of the day, but Perez was just as sharp, holding the Wolverines to one hit and one walk the rest of the way.

Utah Valley returns to Southern California in a week's time to play at the prestigious Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Wolverines open play on Friday night against the Cal Golden Bears and Long Beach State.
