BELLEVUE, Wash. – Trey Cutchen and
Mitch Moralez combined to homer three times on the day and
Coop Rust gave Utah Valley six strong innings en route to leading Utah Valley baseball to its first WAC series win since 2019 with a 14-2 victory over Seattle U in the series finale at Bannerwood Park on Saturday afternoon.
Â
UVU (12-20, 5-10 WAC) took advantage of 11 walks on the day and Cutchen launched two home runs and racked up a total of four RBIs, while Moralez jumpstarted the offense early with a leadoff home run. Rust was excellent on the mound by surrendering just one earned run over 6.0 innings, as he and three other Wolverine hurlers helped keep Seattle U (8-19, 6-9 WAC) off the base paths.
Â
"It was a total team effort where we executed on all sides of the ball. It was great to see the effort and energy from this team in this one," head UVU coach
Eddie Smith said.
Â
Utah Valley jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Moralez hit a home run down the left field line just inside the foul pole in the top of the first.
Paul Vossen had a two-out triple before being stranded on third base to end the inning.Â

The Wolverines added to their lead in the second,
Cole Jordan and
Copper Hansen reached on one-out walks before
Kyle Coburn drove home Jordan on a hard base hit to center. SU's Nestor German limited the damage with a strikeout and flyout.Â
Â
UVU pulled away in the fifth inning after Moralez reached on an infield single and scored on a two-run homer from Cutchen to right to give the Wolverines a 4-1 advantage. The inning continued when
Mick Madsen singled to right before Vossen and
Spencer Olsen were walked to load the bases.
Brody Ponti and Jordan each hit sacrifice flys to bring Madsen and Vossen home to score, making it 6-1 Utah Valley. After being hit by a pitch, Hansen reached, and Coburn walked to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Moralez, hitting for the second time in the inning, drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the Wolverine lead to 7-1.Â
Â
In the sixth inning, the Wolverines added to their lead, scoring a pair of runs. Madsen led off the inning with a double to right field, followed by a walk issued to Vossen to put two runners on base. A groundout moved the runners to second and third before
Brandon Luna lifted a sac-fly to center, allowing Madsen to score. Vossen, who had moved to third on the sac-fly, scored after a balk by Seattle U to make it 9-1 UVU.Â
Â
After Seattle U scored a run in the home-half of the sixth to make it 9-2. Utah Valley loaded the bases on a base hit by Hansen, Coburn reached on an error, and Moralez walked. Cutchen walked with the bases loaded to make it 10-1 before Madsen hit a fly ball to center to score Coburn on a sac fly to make it 11-1.Â
Â
Cutchen hit his second home run of the game in the ninth, his third of the series, to put UVU up 12-2. The Wolverines added later in the inning when pitches hit Madsen and Luna, and Jordan had an infield single, and Madsen came around to score on the play on an SU throwing error to make it 14-2. A hitter later, Hansen lined a double to right to score Luna to bring the UVU edge to 14-2.Â
Â
Rust (2-4) earned the win after giving up just one earned run on seven while while punching out two over 6.0 innings. Nestor German (0-3) takes the loss for Seattle U. Luke McCullough,

Â
With Saturday's victory, UVU took two of three from Seattle for Utah Valley's first WAC series win since it took two of three from Sacramento State at home in May of 2019.Â
Â
Utah Valley completes the road trip with a Monday night tilt at Pac-12 foe Washington at 7:00 p.m. MT/6:00 p.m. PT. The Wolverines will then return home to open a WAC series on Thursday, April 14 against in-state foe Dixie State in the Old Hammer Rivalry.
