Utah Valley blasts out four homers, tops Utah 14-3

Mitch Moralez led the way by going 4-for-6 with two home runs, while Spencer Olsen and Kyle Coburn each added round trippers as a total of 10 different Wolverines tallied hits on the afternoon.

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University baseball banged out season-high tallies of 21 hits and four home runs en route to defeating the University of Utah, 14-3, on Tuesday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark.

Mitch Moralez homered twice and posted a 4-for-6 outing with three RBIs to lead UVU (10-19), while Mick Madsen also tallied a four-hit day by going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Kyle Coburn and Spencer Olsen also homered for UVU, as a total of 10 Wolverines recorded hits on the afternoon.

"It was awesome to see (when asked about his team's offensive outburst). Offensively as a whole, anytime you can walk six times and only strikeout five you are owning the zone," head UVU coach Eddie Smith said. "Our guys have done a really good job over the past two and a half weeks now of making a commitment of owning the zone. And I'm proud of them for continuing to do that pitch after pitch."

The Utes (17-11-1) got off to a quick start thanks to back-to-back solo homers in the top of the first from Chase Anderson and TJ Clarkson to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

UVU struck back with a two-run home run from Coburn to left in the second to tie the game at 2-2. Two batters later, Moralez followed with a two-run big fly of his own to left center to give the Wolverines a 4-2 advantage. Following a walk from Madsen and a single from Paul Vossen, UVU then pulled off a first-and-third double steal to make it 5-2. Brody Ponti then tripled to right center to drive home Vossen, and Spencer Olsen capped the scoring in the seven-run frame with an RBI single up the middle to extend UVU's lead to 7-2.

The Wolverine offense kept things going in the third thanks to a two-out two-run single from Madsen to extend their advantage to 9-2.

Utah then got a solo homer from Clarkson to right in the fourth—his second of the game—to make it 9-3, but UVU responded with a solo homer to deep right center from Olsen in the bottom of the inning to once again give the Wolverines a seven-run cushion.

Moralez then blasted out his second round-tripper of the day with a leadoff homer to left center in the seventh. UVU then added three more runs that inning to extend its lead to 14-3. Following a double from Trey Cutchen, Madsen then singled to second and Cutchen came in to score on a throwing error. Paul Vossen then followed with an RBI triple to right and Ponti then added a run on an RBI groundout.

Luke McCullough earned the win in relief for UVU after giving up just one run over 3.0 solid innings of work to improve to 2-1 on the year. Blake Zeleny, Bobby Voortmeyer, and Andrwe Hauck also all tossed scoreless outings of relief on the day for the Wolverines. Utah starter Brady Maylett was tagged with the loss to drop to 0-2.

Besides Moralez and Madsen's four-hit outings, Vossen followed by going 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, while Ponti, Olsen and Copper Hansen all added two hits apiece. Clarkson paced the Utes by going 3-for-5 with two home runs.

The contest marked the second of three season meetings between the Wolverines and Utes. The in-state foes will conclude the season series in the rubber match on Wednesday, April 27 at UCCU Ballpark.

UVU will now return to conference play with a trip to the Pacific Northwest to take on Seattle U this weekend in Bellevue, Washington (April 8-10). The Wolverines will cap the trip with a midweek contest against another Pac-12 foe in the Washington Huskies on Monday, April 11.
