BAKERSFIELD, CALIF – Utah Valley University came from behind and won in extra innings, 14-8, over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field in Bakersfield, California.
UVU (8-16) trailed 4-0 early but responded in the late innings to take a 7-5 lead. CSUB (10-13) scored two runs in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. The Wolverines' bats came alive to score seven runs in the 10th to seal the victory.
"It was a great team effort. We were able to overcome adversity a few times for an extra-inning road victory. That is the kind of grit we are working to have be the identity of our program as we continue forward," head coach
Eddie Smith said.
The Wolverines took the lead for good in extra innings scoring seven runs in the 10th.
Mitch Moralez led off the extra frame by being hit by a pitch, and
Trey Cutchen knocked home Moralez after a single from
Cole Jordan.
Kayler Yates lined a single to center to score two following an intentional walk to
Mick Madsen.
Brandon Luna walked before
Kyle Coburn hit a no-doubt grand slam to left to put UVU up 14-7 and put the game away.
Traiing 4-0 in the early innings, Cutchen lined a base hit to start the fourth frame and moved to third on a double from Madsen. A batter later,
Copper Hansen, drove a fly ball to left for a sacrifice fly to score Cutchen and get UVU on the board.
In the late innings, the Wolverines rallied to tie the game.
Brandon Luna started the seventh with a double down the right-field line. The next hitter, Coburn, drove a ball to left field for a base hit that moved Luna over to third.
Garrett Broussard entered the game as a pinch-hitter and walked to load the bases. The Wolverines scored four runs in the inning, with Jordan being hit by a pitch to drive in the first one. Cutchen then followed by hitting a ball hard that ricocheted off the glove of the second baseman to bring home Coburn. Madsen provided a double down the left field line to bring home two and tie the game at 5-5.
The Wolverines took their first lead in the eighth. Yates was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a hard single to right by Luna. Yates scored on a double by Moralez and advanced Luna to third.
Connor Hall, who entered the game in the seventh as a pinch-runner, had a sacrifice fly to left to score Luna and give UVU a 7-5 lead.
The Roadrunners rallied in the ninth, scoring two runs to send the game to extra innings at 7-7. The 'Runners were led offensively by Andrew Allanson, who went 3-for-3 with a home run and a sacrifice fly, which tied the game to send it to extra innings.
Yates (1-0) picked up the win in relief, going 1.2 innings with one hit. Ryan Verdugo (0-1) took the loss for CSUB.
Mason Gray got the start for UVU and went 4.1 innings, giving up five hits.
Josh Brown pitched well for UVU in an extended relief appearance going 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs.
The 14 runs marked a season-high for the Wolverines while the 16 hits were good enough for the second highest tally by UVU on the season. A total of five Wolverines finished with multiple hits on the afternoon.
Utah Valley returns to the state of Utah for a midweek game at University of Utah on March 29 with a 6:00 p.m. MT first pitch from Smith's Ballpark. The Wolverines host WAC foe Sacramento State for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday night with a 6:05 p.m. MT first pitch.
